East Hampshire DC

An inclusive office for all

East Hampshire District Council has broken new ground, transforming the shell of an office building into a creative space, enabling people with a range of different needs to work positively, productively and collaboratively. We’ve developed this high-quality space by working closely with staff, union representatives and our consultants Overbury, so that changes made to the interior design were done in the interests of inclusion and adaptability. Whether you work best in a bustling open plan office or in near silence, the office allows staff to work in a way that helps them to be at their most productive.

This submission focuses on our Workforce to Reflect the Community Strategy, but we do a range of other EDI work that covers other areas, including becoming an anti-racist organisation, submission for the Stonewall Top 100 Employers Index, being a Disability Confident Employer and undertaking a Women's Commission, as well as emerging areas of focus that include neurodiversity and adopting care experience as a protected characteristic. The movement and achievement in the Council’s EDI agenda has progressed significantly over the last year and will continue to do so, with our aim to be a leader in this field, carrying out best practice and leading innovative approaches.

West Sussex CC

Inclusive recruitment in public health

In 2023, the West Sussex Public Health Team undertook a significant initiative to enhance the inclusion and diversity of its workforce by recruiting for two Graduate Public Health Practitioner posts with funding from NHS England. This aimed to provide more opportunities for local individuals from diverse backgrounds with qualifications in public health-related subjects to enter the public health workforce. The lessons learned from these innovations has helped us to nearly double the number of applications in the past year for our specialist roles rom 214 to 591 and also increase the number of people from racially marginalised communities within the team from 5.8% in 22/23 to 37% in 23/24. Also an increase in the number of people hired who have a disability from 3.73% in 22/23, to 7.3% in 23/24. We hope to continue this work to make improvements across the council.
